The field of forensic science is heavily relied upon by the criminal justice system. Forensic personnel are responsible for the collection, preservation, analysis, and interpretation of evidence in a variety of cases; this evidence has particular importance when it is being used in criminal cases.
All forensic personnel must be knowledgeable and skilled in their chosen area of study in order to do their job to the best of their ability and provide adequate forensic service. Forensic science is able to reveal information such as who committed a crime, whether or not a crime was actually committed, and what exactly took place during the crime.
If one piece of evidence is mishandled, manipulated, or misinterpreted a person’s life could be destroyed or justice can go unserved. It is therefore important that all forensic personnel should be adequately trained in the use of the forensic tools they use to produce evidence. It is not enough to simply use digital forensic tools; practitioners need to be able to explain the functions performed and why the results produced can be relied upon by the court. The court will base much of their assessment on the strength of this evidence.
